area,where they experience themselves a garden and free open space for expressing their hobby.
Firstly, all family members highly respect an existing trees in a garden of around 5800sqm,they
prefer to live in between them.
Second, thanks to their great hobby of collection a typical old rural house with wooden structure
dated early XIX century.This beautifull structure will be conceived as an art object and plays as a
heart of new living space, it leads architect toward a valueable concept of modern vernacular
architecture in Vietnam.
Traditionally, a typical rural house combines few detached small blocks with appropriated different
volumes which are functioned following a rural lifestyle. In general, a main block is always wooden
structure houses altar and closed living space facing only one side to the central couryard. Other
blocks are arranged surround this courtyard and functioned as kitchen, storage, animal
cage…Whole arrangement follows an south-east wind direction, fengshui custom and an
agricultural activities as well.These kinds of living space become a inspired resources for design
processing of new suburb house with ambition of modern vernacular architectural style.
As a result, a new family house combines seven seperated blocks with human scale in volume, each
block serves a specific function of house : gate, kitchen and dining, living, master bedroom block ,
two bedroom blocks, water tower and sauna. The solution of seperated blocks naturally come from
rural house’s compostion and making a flexible foundations in construction with high demanding
of keeping an existing trees. In fact, architect only moves four small trees and creating a continuous
artificial green courts in between blocks in which lead people walk and enjoying an garden with
The void in between increases a natural wind effect and intimacy as well.
The heart is living block houses an beautifull wooden structure and placed at the central of whole
composition; living space faces to the small lotus pond of the south-east direction and opening out
to the wild garden. Here, an old rural wooden frame is transformed to the modern lifestyle. Living
space with wooden structure is fulled of natural light and plays as an family gallery and art works
White lime stone is local material and sensitive texture. All blocks were built with double skin
wall,except living block and water tower. Inside is brick wall with light color paint finishing,
outside is stone wall.
These materials follow a simple architectural volumes forming an artificial continuous gadern.
Other way,a stone surface makes an good condition for vertical plantation, so the outside is became
a liveable surfaces or a symbiosis of architecture and plants , an artificial garden changes time by

As mention above, living block is cladding by terracota tiles in which hamonizing with a traditional
terracotta roof tiles and maitaining a best simple form. By meaning of interaction, an water tower is
also cladded by terracotta.
